Histology Technician

Position Details

  • Job Purpose:  Perform all general histology functions for support and production activities in histology lab.
  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Hours:  Monday-Friday 10am-6:30pm or 12pm-8:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Accessioning of tissue specimens
  • Assisting Pathologist Assistants/Techs
  • Processing and embedding tissue specimens
  • Microtomy and staining tissue sections
  • Evaluating and recommending adjustments for processes and procedures as part of quality assurance
  • Maintaining equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols, and logging preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment.
  • Preparing solutions and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures
  • Complies with all laboratory policies and procedures, OSHA and CLIA regulations
  • Following all OSHA and lab safety guidelines and maintains a safe and clean environment by the daily cleaning of work areas, cleaning up spills and all other duties necessary to sustain an appropriate work area
  • General lab organization

Principle Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures.
    • Performs all routine histology functions that support the production of microscopic slides for interpretation by a pathologist.
    • Accessions tissue specimens, assists Pathologist Assistants, sections frozen tissue using a cryostat, processes and embeds tissue specimens, performs microtomy and staining, prepares solutions and stains, completes specialty testing using histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques, and performs quality control procedures.
    • Assesses integrity of specimens for testing and processing, verifying correct patient identification and using safe and secure specimen handling.
    • May assist with biopsy collection.
    • Evaluates results for accuracy and resolves test problems.
    • Performs and documents required instrument maintenance, and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action.
    • Ensures accurate record keeping and appropriate retention.
  • Accurate and timely processing of specimens.
    • Reviews orders and verifies correct patient labeling.
    • Performs processing with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies.
  • Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements.
    • Stocks, rotates, and requests supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area.
    • Performs various clerical duties.
    • Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects, or committees as assigned.
    • Assists in the training of employees and students.

Job Description:
Processes and prepares pathology and cytology specimens, as defined by CLIA, for pathologist and cytotechnologist interpretation. Our team members rotate through a variety of responsibilities including embedding, microtomy, routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, special stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and whole slide imaging. We serve a diverse patient population including pediatric and transplant patients and work with a variety of tissue types including kidney, liver, prostate, and G.I. biopsies, bone marrows, cell blocks, dermatology specimens, and routine surgical cases. Histotechnologist:

The Histotechnologist (HTL) functions independently in performing a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing, and acts as a resource for problem resolution and interpretation of results. The HTL correlates data based on clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and other conditions affecting test results. The HTL collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to promote customer satisfaction. The HTL writes procedures and participates in laboratory performance improvement and quality assurance activities.

The minimum pay rate for Histotechnologist is $30.11 per hour.

Histology Technician:

The Histology Technician plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional laboratory services to diverse populations within an integrated healthcare environment. The Histology Technician performs the work necessary for the production of microscopic preparations used for high complexity testing, performs routine and specialty procedures, correlates data-based knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting preparation results and performs quality control procedures within established parameters. This position also may be involved in assisting pathology staff in specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, ensuring efficient workflow as appropriate. The HT works independently under general supervision.

The minimum pay rate for Histology Technician is $26.02 per hour.
