At Associated Skin Care Specialists, P.A., a growing private dermatology practice in

Minnesota, we specialize in areas of adult and pediatric dermatology, Mohs micrographic

surgery, laser surgery, cosmetic dermatology, occupational dermatology, and

dermatopathology. We seek to build a positive relationship with our patients, which is

based on trust, confidence and mutual understanding of their health care needs and goals.

We are seeking a Mohs Surgery (Frozen Section Histology) Histology Technician for our

Fridley, Maple Grove, and Coon Rapids offices.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory procedures.
  • Perform all routine histology functions that support the production of microscopic
  • slides for interpretation by the Mohs surgeon.
  • Accession tissue specimens, section frozen tissue using a cryostat, process and
  • embed tissue specimens, perform microtomy and staining, prepare solutions and
  • stains, and perform quality control procedures.
  • Assess integrity of specimens for testing and processing, verifying correct patient
  • identification and using safe and secure specimen handling.
  • Evaluate results for accuracy and resolve test problems.
  • Perform and document required instrument maintenance, and quality control; take
  • appropriate remedial action.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping and appropriate retention.
  • Complete quality assurance forms for equipment and procedures according to CLIA regulations.

Qualifications\Skills:

Education

  • Associate’s Degree or higher.
  • HT or HTL certified.

Skills

  • 1-2 years of dermatopathology experience preferred.
  • Must be familiar with routine histology protocols.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work effectively.
  • Good time management and multi-tasking skills required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, physicians, and staff.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform a vital part of the patient care process through embedding and preparing slides for routine H&E and special stain procedures
  • Performs and documents scheduled preventative maintenance
  • Recognize when troubleshooting is needed for processing, embedding, cutting, staining
  • Work in a fast-paced laboratory environment with biological and chemical hazards
  • Champion safety, compliance, and quality control.

All you need is:

  • At minimum graduation from a school of Histotechnology accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS AND HT (ASCP)
  • 1 year of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing
  • Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent
  • Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
  • Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers,
  • automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms
Bonus points if you’ve got:
  • 2+ years of laboratory training or experience in a high volume laboratory with documented special stain and immunohistochemistry experience

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Medical Technology/Clinical Lab Science or 
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science
  • 2 to 5 years of experience performing non-waived testing and tests of moderate to high complexity in applicable specialty area
  • CLIA Defined Qualifications: § 493.1413Standard: Technical Consultant Qualifications Standard: General supervisor qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 to 5 years of progressive lab leadership

Licenses/Certifications

Pay Range: $39.19 to $53.72 per hour

Principle Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures.
    • Performs all routine histology functions that support the production of microscopic slides for interpretation by a pathologist.
    • Accessions tissue specimens, assists Pathologist Assistants, sections frozen tissue using a cryostat, processes and embeds tissue specimens, performs microtomy and staining, prepares solutions and stains, completes specialty testing using histochemical and/or immunohistochemical techniques, and performs quality control procedures.
    • Assesses integrity of specimens for testing and processing, verifying correct patient identification and using safe and secure specimen handling.
    • May assist with biopsy collection.
    • Evaluates results for accuracy and resolves test problems.
    • Performs and documents required instrument maintenance, and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action.
    • Ensures accurate record keeping and appropriate retention.
  • Accurate and timely processing of specimens.
    • Reviews orders and verifies correct patient labeling.
    • Performs processing with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies.
  • Maintains safety, education, and competency requirements.
    • Stocks, rotates, and requests supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area.
    • Performs various clerical duties.
    • Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects, or committees as assigned.
    • Assists in the training of employees and students.
    • Performs proficiency testing as assigned.

  • CLIA defined responsibilities:

Job Requirements

  • Associate's or Vocational degree in medical laboratory science from a regionally accredited institution, and completion of clinical internship required or
  • Vocational or Technical Training in a comprehensive military laboratory science program required or
  • Bachelor's degree in related science from a regionally accredited institution + 2 years clinical lab experience in appropriate analytic required and
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1423 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
